Flex 3 my ass, it's like going back to Flex 0.2
On March 3, 2008, Flash / Flex - 9 CommentsDamn I hate the new flex builder. Flex Builder 2.0 wasn’t good, but the new Flex Builder is just plain rubbish! I wish adobe didn’t bought macromedia, I’m sure MM wouldn’t release such a crappy product and have the guts to call it a complete new version. FB3 doesn’t even deserve the name beta, let alone final!
Let me give you some examples what’s wrong with FB3:
- First of all: it can’t run alongside FB2 (at least, the installer tells me to close FB2, so I guess it will remove FB2 before installing FB3), since I need to work on older projects too, I want to keep FB2.
- My mxml view is fucked up, look at this mess:

Well, that’s not going to work very nice, does it?
-I like to run my applications using [ctrl] + [enter], just like in flash. So I head up to preferences and click on keys. Look what a beautiful screen it gives me:

Nice job adobe!
And fourth (and last, I uninstalled FB3):
You cannot import old projects from your hard drive into the new FB3
In FB2 you could do new -> other, in FB3 this gives you an empty screen again. Or you went to import -> existing projects into workspace. In FB3 the import functionality is broken, you cannot import anything.
Adobe please…. if you want Flex to become a market leader in web apps, ‘defeating’ Silverlight and JavaFX, stop making crappy product and give us a decent environment! Honestly, I don’t see why you would release a product which is even crappier as the old one. Flash / Fireworks CS3 wasn’t too good either, so the only thing I can say is congratulations Adobe, you successfully fucked up every product of the macromedia group!
Ow and FYI: I work on Win XP x64, clean install, so don’t come telling me it’s some spyware shit or something!
What others have to say:
Hey, sorry you’re frustrated with the latest release. Maybe I can help a little.
issue 1 (running alongside FB2) – No, you dont have to uninstall FB2 to run FB3.
issue 2 (mxml view fucked up) – Have you tried closing all views and then reopening them? Or minimizing them and then maximizing them?
issue 3 (keys page not visible) – Sorry, I could’t replicate this. You should see a display with all the shortcuts and commands in it. Have you tried posting to Flexcoders or the Adobe forums to see if anyone else is having this issue?
issue 4 – Again, I was not able to replicate the issue you are having. I just now tried and imported a FB2 project into FB3 (File > Import > Other … then select Flex Builder > Flex Project). Of course, my project was pretty simplistic, so maybe for larger examples there are issues?

flex docs
1. Good to know, I’ll try,
2. Well that’s just a work around, it still stays a bug…
3. I’ve tried everything to get the right screen (restarting flex, rebooting, reinstalling) but it won’t give it, and it’s not the only screen which is missing, the Flex Build path, where you can organize your imported SWC’s is also missing, and that a kinda crucial screen!
4. I’ve found a work around for this one:
- Click on the help button on the bottom right of the screen,
- Resize the window,
- Double click on one of the given options, than it suddenly works…
I haven’t posted to flexcoders or adobe yet, but I will do, coz a better Flex Builder: isn’t that what we all want
3. I have the same problem, did you find a fix yet?
@Chris: Yeah I did. It makes no sense, but it works. Here goes:
1. Go to the screen which is missing.
2. Click on the ‘help’ (?) button
3. Resize the screen
The options should now magically show up!
edit
I see I posted it before, it’s the same solution as the import bug. I know it doesn’t work for all screens (screens which have a kind of panel inside it won’t be affected), so let me know if it works for you.
Hey this works, kind of ugly, but better than nothing…
Thanks a lot mate!
OMG — I cannot believe that you and I are the only two people having this problem with the properties window, but I have combed Google and this is the only mention of it I could find. Not-to-mention you’re site is listed by Google as “maybe harmful to your computer” — wow, talk about arcane. Is it a conspiracy?
Anyway, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, the help window, double-click, resize worked. I can see the Build path window now.
What shit!
Thanks, I know about the google thing, working on that right now. Not a very nice action from google, they THINK I’m spreading malware or a LINK or AD (google ad) is linking to a site which spreads malware. Instead of contacting me first, they just blacklisted me. I now have to wait till they rescan my site.
Hey man !
either you are a newbie or you couldn’t know how to handle FB3 as all the issues described by you are fake …. Its nearly a complete and new version of FLEX by Adobe ..so better don’t abuse Adobe and try to learn something by practicing on it or leave it !
@amar: Hey man, just because it works on your system doesn’t mean it works on every system. If you’ve read the comments you can see I’m not the only one having these problems!
Besides… this has nothing to do with practicing on a product, it’s just buggy (again… on some systems). Oh, and being ‘nearly complete (nuff said) and new version’ doesn’t mean it’s bug free!
So, if it works for you: good for you. If it doesn’t: Stick to FB2 and wait for FB4.
